    ONLY A MINER

    Only a miner who works underground,
    Toiling and striving all the year round,
    Fretting and pining his poor life away,
    Though he labours hard he receives little pay.

    Shut up in the dreary, dismal, dark mine,
    From the pure air of heaven, where the sun never shines,
    Stripped to the waste like a Trojan of old,
    As he breaks into fragments the hard solid coal.

    Surrounded by darkness and dangers unseen,
    As the sweat trickles down him in many ways a stream,
    He braves death and dangers to earn a bit bread,
    While others stay snugly and warm in their bed.
